Playing as an Alien in Level Zero Extraction is my personal favorite part of the game, although it can get tricky at times despite how powerful they are. Here are the best strategies and tips to dominate as the Alien in Level Zero Extraction.
Aliens may be incredibly quick and powerful, but they are also very vulnerable to light. You can be destroyed in seconds by a prepared merc, so knowing all of your abilities and exactly how to use them properly is key in Level Zero Extraction.
There are some things you should know about the Alien to go into the game as prepared as possible.
The Alien can both walk and crawl, but crawling is superior in every way. It is faster, especially when sprinting, and makes you a harder target. There is virtually no reason to be standing up as the Alien.
Across the map will be eggs. If you consume them, your maximum energy will increase. Your energy will refill over time, but the more energy you have available, the more abilities you can pop off at once. As more players die, you’ll receive more max energy per egg.
Upon death, Aliens respawn, but their energy maximum will be reset, meaning you must collect eggs again.
Finally, the blue electricity sparks that you may see across the map significantly improve your energy regeneration if you’re standing on top or under them. So these make for fantastic healing stations and allow you to chain your abilities whilst still having a full energy pool.
With these basics out the way, we can get into Alien abilities and playstyles.
The following abilities are the cornerstones of the Alien playstyle.
Special Vision allows you to see through the walls to detect key objects. Vents will be highlighted in green, eggs will be pinpointed by yellow markers, and electricity will be represented through blue sparks. Any harmful light will also appear in red. You will want to almost always be using Special Vision to track down crucial eggs and to identify vent routes.
Invisibility turns you almost translucent, making you much harder to see. Most importantly, this ability renders you immune to light, allowing you to pass through overwise harmful areas. Be careful, however, as using an ability or running out of energy will end your invisibility.
Regeneration allows you to convert energy into health. This ability can be performed whilst invisible. The more eggs you collect, the more you’ll be able to regenerate, so make sure to always collect them should you pass them.
You will be using these abilities almost all the time to stay alive, route out important items, and evade harm.
The Alien’s ultimate goal is to kill all the mercs, and you’ll be using these abilities to do just that. Note their own individual uses to use them appropriately for maximum effect.
Slime Spit is a projectile attack. It harms and blurs the vision of other players, and can be used to put out harmful flares. This attack has quite the drop-off, so make sure to aim a little higher than you may expect. This is especially useful for ambush situations, as you’ll be able to hinder their vision as you pounce. Additionally, it can be used to aid your getaway by impairing their vision before an escape.
Acid Cloud is an asset of a skill that provides an AoE projectile attack that harms and slows mercs in a decent radius. Not only will it force the mercs to flee, but it’ll allow you to catch up to them even faster. The nature of this attack can also be used for area denial by cutting off downed mercs or separating them. It also makes for a brilliant way of killing them faster.
Egg Trap allows you to place an egg in a decent radius around you. Humans walking near these Egg Traps will suffer damage, and you will see their location temporarily. Essentially motion scanners with a bite, these eggs will also cause paranoia and fear, tools that are invaluable to the Aliens. It’s best to place these just out of sight and around corners so they aren’t so easily seen. They are especially useful around hotspots, also.
These abilities are more than tools for harm. These can be used to disorientate and separate the mercs for an easier kill. As these abilities have cooldowns, using the appropriate skills when you’re on the hunt is key. You can be much more liberal with the Egg Traps, however. Ideally, you’ll want to litter the map with them.
These abilities don’t deal damage, but they will streamline your hunting and allow you to engage in killing in a safer and easier manner.
Scan detects nearby mercs and shows them as what looks like red ghosts. The higher the mercs’ heart rate, the more visible they’ll be. This means that the Scan can be used not only to detect human hotspots, but if you’re spreading terror well enough, you’ll be able to chase them down should they escape your sight.
EMP essentially knocks out all nearby electronics, disabling lights for safe travel and any equipped flashlights. Flashlights are the chief method of attacking and killing Aliens, so getting rid of their primary defense allows for easy kills. Be careful, however, as savvy mercs may wait for the EMP before bringing out their flashlights, as it doesn’t affect unequipped flashlights.
Scream Wave emits a wave that disorientates and slows humans, making this a fantastic skill to use before the pounce. Getting a jump on the mercs with this skill will render them briefly helpless and at the mercy of whatever other skills you have lined up.
Using these abilities will help you track down the mercs that can prove evasive, and will help you get the jump on them without fear of retaliation.
Now that you know the full toolkit of the Alien in Level Zero Extraction, and how best to use each skill, you are more than ready to venture into the maps to stalk and hunt down the invaders. It’s one thing knowing everything, however, and another thing using them to secure victory.
At the beginning of the game, the map will be populated with mercs fresh for the slaughter. During this time, you’ll want to prioritize grabbing eggs. Your abilities have long cooldown times and you’ll need as much energy as possible to successfully kill humans.
Aliens are incredibly sensitive to light, and only mere seconds under a flashlight or flare will be enough to kill you. All a human has to do is pull one of those out, and they will every time, and you’ll be dead in moments.
The moment you spot a human through your scan, do not go engage immediately. Their reflexes or any handy drones will eliminate you immediately. I’d only engage in a fight once all my abilities are ready and once I’ve almost got as much energy as I can.
Save your EMP and Slime Spit, as they are best used to put out a flashlight or a flare that a player might use. Before you go in for the kill, use Scream Wave or Acid Cloud to surprise them, then rush in and keep hitting them until they’re dead.
By disorientating and surprising them, they’ll be less ready to retaliate. And when they do retaliate, use the appropriate skill to render their defense useless. Defenseless, they’ll go down in moments.
At the start of the game, you’ll get less energy from eggs and players may be closer together. During this time, follow these groups, ping them for your Alien ally to notice them, and wait for opportunities.
If a player splits off, hunt them down using the above method before going back to the vents to hide.
If the players engage in a firefight with other mercs, you can use the Acid Cloud or Scream Wave ability to shock them before jumping down and killing whoever you can. Just be ready to hop back into the vent and heal if you start taking damage.
Just make sure you never take on a group without either support or a distraction. Aliens don’t have the quickest ability rate, so you may not have enough time and energy to take out the flares and flashlights of all the players, as you’ll only be able to use each ability once. As the attack rate is also slow, you won’t be able to knock them all down.
This is the foundation of any good Alien player. As you play games, you may want to tweak strategies to reflect the situation, and you’ll know what methods work best for you. But with all this in mind, you’ll be incredibly hard to take down. Just remember that you’re playing as a stalker, not a hunter, so please don’t rush into fights. You’ll likely lose every time.
With this knowledge, you’ll be able to hone your skills and wipe out all the mecs in no time in Level Zero Extraction. Having performance and graphical issues can really impede your progress, however, so make sure you’ve got those in check.
