Hamburg-based clean energy asset management company Luxcara has signed a preferred supplier agreement with China Mingyang Smart Energy Company, which will provide 16 of the world's most powerful offshore wind turbines for the "Waterkant" offshore wind farm. Unit capacity is up to 18.5 MW. These giant turbines have a rotor diameter of 260 meters and once completed, the "Waterkant" wind farm will be able to provide clean electricity to approximately 400,000 households.
This site noted that Luxcara launched an international tender at the end of 2023 and emphasized that when selecting Mingyang’s turbines, the decision was based on “strict due diligence, covering the supply chain, environmental, social and Corporate Governance (ESG) and Cybersecurity Assessments provided by reputable international consultancies”.
However, a spokesperson for the German Economy Ministry told Reuters that German offshore wind farms using Chinese wind turbines will be scrutinized more carefully, focusing on safety and competition issues. The spokesperson said that the federal government will pay close attention to this decision, on the one hand, it must consider critical infrastructure issues, and on the other hand, it must maintain a fair and competitive market environment.
Germany has set a target to achieve 80% clean electricity by 2030.
