“爱奇艺限制投屏案”一审落槌,原告获 41 天黄金会员 VIP 时长补偿

1. This site reported on July 1 that Zhu Yuan, a seven-year old fan of iQiyi last year, took iQiyi to court because he was dissatisfied with the platform’s restriction of high-definition screencasting rights. According to Modern Express, after more than a year of trial, the court ruled in the first instance that the plaintiff had the rights to 720P and 1080P high-definition screen projection before July 15, 2025, and the iQiyi platform compensated the plaintiff for 41 days of gold membership VIP time.

2. It is reported that Zhu Yuan has been a member of iQiyi since 2017, and has recharged to become a gold VIP member of the iQiyi platform for five consecutive years, and has been enjoying unlimited screen casting services. However, in January 2023, he discovered that iQiyi limited the screen projection resolution of gold VIP members to 480P, and members had to upgrade to enjoy higher resolution. Zhu Yuan believes that this change infringes on his membership rights, especially since he has been a top-up gold VIP member for more than 5 consecutive years. After communicating with iQiyi's customer service to no avail, Zhu Yuan believed that iQiyi's unilateral change of contract terms had constituted a breach of contract and should bear liability for breach of contract, so Zhu Yuan took iQiyi to court.

3. Zhu Yuan’s request is that he hopes the court will prohibit iQiyi from reducing or restricting the plaintiff’s membership rights at the time of purchasing the membership in any way during the validity period of the plaintiff’s membership, and that it should not limit the plaintiff’s screen projection resolution in any way. If the defendant continues to fail to provide the above-mentioned rights and interests to the plaintiff from January 14, 2023, the expiration date of the above-mentioned rights and interests will be postponed, and the extension period will be calculated based on the length of time when the defendant fails to provide the above-mentioned rights and interests during the membership validity period.

4. This site noticed that after Zhu Yuan’s case attracted public attention, iQiyi issued an announcement in February 2023 to resume the 720P and 1080P screencasting services for gold VIP members who are still in the subscription state, and to optimize Multi-device login policy. Despite this, Zhu Yuan decided to continue the lawsuit to obtain a judicial decision.

5. The court’s first-instance judgment supported Zhu Yuan’s appeal, but he still had questions about iQiyi’s membership policy, especially regarding the differences in rights between automatic renewal members and single-year card members. In addition, Zhu Yuan believes that since the first instance judgment granted it 41 days of membership replenishment, iQiyi should also replenish its gold membership users from January 11, 2023 to February 20, 2023 for the same period of time.

6. Zhu Yuan is still seriously considering whether to appeal the verdict.

7. Previously, iQiyi also caused controversy due to its advanced on-demand function. It was sued by lawyer Wu Shengwei and was eventually supported by the court. This led to the video platform canceling its advanced on-demand service.
