Spotify can now act as a psychic of sorts, delivering answers to probing questions with songs. Whether you're curious if Spotify thinks we're living in a simulation or if you should add one more thing to your shopping cart to get free shipping, it has a song to share as an answer to your query.

Spotify Can Now Answer Any Question With a Song

On February 29, 2024, as detailed in a post on For the Record, Spotify introduced a new feature called Song Psychic. As the name suggests, this sees Spotify acting as a psychic (sort of).

The idea is that you ask Spotify questions about subjects as diverse as love, lunch, school, and style, and Spotify will provide answers in the form of songs. If you ever played with a magic 8-ball as a kid, it's a very similar experience. Except instead of getting answers like "my sources say no" you might get "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas as your answer.

Song Psychic is just a bit of fun, and follows in the footsteps of other cool in-app experiences, such as Playlists for Pets and Supergrouper. Spotify itself makes it clear that this was only created "for entertainment only," and as "a fun experience". It further caveats this with a warning that "Song Psychic should not be considered a serious source of advice on any issue whatsoever" and that it is "in no way actually magical."

How to Ask Spotify's Song Psychic Your Burning Questions

To access Spotify's Song Psychic, just visit spotify.com/songpsychic on your mobile device. Or visit that same URL on your computer and scan the QR code with your mobile device. Either way, the Spotify app should open and whisk you directly to the Song Psychic experience.

Once you have accessed Song Psychic once, you should be able to just search for "song psychic" in the app, and see it listed as a genre.

To use Spotify's Song Psychic:

1. Click Get Started, and you'll be asked "What answers do you seek?"
2. Choose one of the nine categories: School, Style, Lunch, Love, Career, Myself, My Future, Friends & Family, or Life’s Greatest Mysteries. Alternatively, click Ask for me to shortcut the process.
3. Once you have selected your category, you can ask your question. Simply click Tap to type and start typing, and Spotify will provide a list of questions it thinks best match your query.
4. Select a question from the list, and click Submit.
5. Once you have placed your thumb on the "fingerprint scanner", Spotify will answer your question with a song.

What Should You Ask Spotify's Song Psychic?

You can ask the Song Psychic anything by typing your question in the text box. However, Spotify has pre-populated the feature with a finite number of questions. So, you either need to choose one of these default questions or be assigned one at random. Which is annoying but completely understandable when you realize how many possible questions there are.

As an example, I clicked on Life's Greatest Mysteries and asked, "What is the meaning of life?". Which is a question we all ponder from time to time, and surely one a lot of people will ask Spotify's Song Psychic. When I tapped "Ask for me," Spotify switched this to, "Should I text first?", providing the answer of "Don't" by Ed Sheeran. (Several of us around the office punched in the same question to see if we all got Ed Sheeran, if you're curious, and we all got different answers, for what that's worth.)

So, ultimately, you're better off just sticking to the questions Spotify provides, scrolling down the list under your chosen subject, and asking the one(s) that most interest you. Just tap "Tap to type", and Spotify will populate a list of ready-made questions. Examples being:

• Can I manifest stuff?
• Is my pet happy?
• Do I have a secret twin?
• Will I see a UFO?
• Should I change my name?
• Is this outfit cute?
• Should I cut off all my hair?
• Am I a good cook?

Spotify's Song Psychic feature shouldn't be taken too seriously, but it's certainly a fun little diversion.
