Cybertruck recall reveals abysmal production rate less than half Tesla's 2,500 units per week goal

For the third time in 2024, Tesla has recalled the Cybertruck. This time, instead of the usual software fix, all 11,688 Cybertrucks that have been produced will need to have replacement windscreen wiper motors fitted.

Tesla describes the wiper motor failure as follows:

This recall includes all model year 2024 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured from November 13, 2023 to June 6, 2024.

On affected vehicles, the front windshield wiper motor controller may stop functioning due to electrical overstress to the gate driver component.

While the Cybertruck recall is concerning for affected owners, it also reveals that Tesla has only managed to produce 7,901 Cybertrucks between April 4 — the cutoff date for the previous Cybertruck accelerator pedal recall of 3,787 — and June 6. That works out to around 3,950 Cybertrucks produced per month or around 877 per week during that 9 week period.

Earlier this month at the Tesla investor call, CEO, Elon Musk, claimed that the production target for the Cybertruck is 2,500 units per week by the end of the year. At the aforementioned production estimate, Tesla isn't even producing half the targetted Cybertrucks per week. Previously, Tesla also stated that it was targetting 250,000 Cybertrucks annually by 2025, which works out to somewhere in the neighbourhood of 4,800 Cybertrucks per week.

Additionally, despite admitting in the recall notice that a non-functional front windscreen wiper could be a severe safety hazard, Tesla isn't advising Cybertruck owners to take immediate action. Instead owners are advised to continue driving their Cybertrucks — even those affected by the recall — and wait until Tesla reaches out to schedule a service appointment.
