When CATL announced itsnew Condensed Battery technology that can reach energy density of 500Wh/kg, it teased that the cells can even be used to power electric planes and ships.
With energy density as high as that of solid-state batteries and twice that of current ternary cells, electric air mobility is no longer restricted to drones like the DJI Mini 4 Pro, or even eVTOLs.
CATL is convinced that the specs of its Condensed Battery will allow it to some day power regional planes with up to 3,000 km (1865 miles) of range and has done the work to prove it.
The process started small, but now it has successfully tested a 4-ton civil aircraft propelled by the battery, announced its CEO Robin Zeng.
To achieve commercial success, CATL needs to prove the Condensed Battery can run larger planes, and it nowplans to have an 8-ton aircraft with 2,000-3,000km range in flight by 2028.
Earlier this year, the battery company's chief engineer tipped that the team is working onaviation-grade production quality and safety certification for its new cells that will also be used for other applications, including electric cars.
As CATL usually does, the Condensed Battery technology that will fly the 8-ton civil aircraft includes many iterative improvements, rather than some grand chemistry breakthrough:
To address the changes of the super high energy density materials resulting from electrochemical reactions, CATL's condensed battery leverages highly conductive biomimetic condensed state electrolytes to construct a micron-level self-adaptive net structure that can adjust the interactive forces among the chains, thus improving the conductive performance of the cells and in turn the efficiency of lithium ion transporting while boosting stability of the microstructure. What is more, condensed battery integrates a range of innovative technologies, including the ultra-high energy density cathode materials, innovative anode materials, separators, and manufacturing processes, offering excellent charge and discharge performance as well as good safety performance.
CATL has ambitions for the electric passenger planes with its batteries to fly on regional routes, in order to make the aircraft industry "cleaner and smarter."
