According to news from this website on June 18, according to Korean media The Elec, Samsung Display recently purchased 5 U.S. patents in the field of FMM-free OLED from the American company Orthogonal.

Four of the patents are titled "Lithographic patterning of organic electronic devices" and another is "Color OLED displays with larger aperture ratios." At present, the corresponding patents of these four patents in South Korea have not changed their owners.

This site understands that fine metal FMM is a metal sheet with a large number of small holes on the surface. It is the core equipment of the traditional OLED evaporation process and is responsible for guiding the directional deposition of OLED luminescent materials. It has the advantages of high processing precision, high mechanical rigidity and high thermal conductivity, making it an indispensable luminescent material guided deposition platform for the OLED process.

But FMM also brings a series of problems such as large accuracy limitations and low material utilization, which further limits the pixel density, brightness and lifespan performance of existing OLED displays.

FMM-free OLED uses photolithography process to construct the RGB pixel emission layer and common layer, which can greatly improve the effective light-emitting area and brightness performance of the OLED panel.

The companies that are showing the fastest performance in the current industry are JDI and Visionox. JDI’s eLEAP OLED will achieve mass production in December 2024, and Visionox is also promoting the commercialization of its ViP technology. At the same time, FMM OLED is also a technology that has attracted much attention.

Industry insiders said that the medium-sized display panel market for IT is suitable for small-scale mass production of leading technologies and will become the main application field of FMM-free OLED in the future.

Samsung Display has purchased relevant patents from Orthogonal and has the technical reserves to fully implement them in the direction of FMM-free medium-sized RGB OLEDs. It can not only help research and development work, but also establish a certain degree of patent defense.
