2024 Q1 Indonesian smartphone market report: Chinese brands shine, 5G shipments surge

In the market share distribution of specific product brands, vivo mobile phones ranked first with a market share of 19.2%, compared with 17.4% in the same period last year, achieving 16% significant growth. Xiaomi mobile phones followed closely, occupying 18.6% of the market share, a significant increase of 55% compared with 12.5% in the same period last year. The market share of brands such as OPPO, Samsung and realme has declined. Among them, OPPO dropped from 23.0% in the same period last year to 17.0%, Samsung dropped from 18.3% to 16.7%, and realme dropped from 11.9% to 9.8%. The market share of other brands of mobile phones increased from 16.9% last year to 18.5%.

According to the analysis results, the decline in market share of OPPO and Samsung is mainly due to the decrease in shipments in the entry-level market (price less than US$200). At the same time, the mid-range market (prices between US$200 and US$399) showed strong growth momentum in the first quarter of 2024, with a year-on-year growth rate of 37% and accounting for 27% of the market share. This growth is mainly driven by brands such as Xiaomi, Samsung and vivo.

In addition, reports show that Indonesia’s 5G smartphone shipments increased by 77% year-on-year in the quarter, accounting for 29% of total smartphone shipments. Among them, the two major brands vivo and OPPO have a combined share of 39% in the 5G market, becoming the main force leading the growth of 5G smartphones. However, due to the relatively slow expansion of 5G networks in Indonesia, manufacturers are still considering whether to continue launching 4G smartphones in the Indonesian market.
