Samsung may cancel plans to launch an upcoming cheap version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 folding screen phone.
The South Korean tech giant originally planned to show off three foldable phones in the summer: Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6 and a cheaper version of Fold 6.
The Fold 6’s screen is equipped with a digital layer to recognize the S-Pen stylus, while the cheaper model will not have this feature, but there are plans to make it thinner. However, once you add water and dust resistance, the product isn't any thinner than similar products from its Chinese rivals.
Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 was 13.4mm thick, and Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 was 10.9mm thick. That means Samsung's budget model of the Fold 6 is virtually indistinguishable from these rivals.
Samsung even recently conducted a 200,000 folding durability test on its budget model Fold 6.
Samsung will begin mass production of components for these foldable screen devices, but its component suppliers said they have not received orders for the cheaper model Fold 6.
Uncertainty about smartphone demand this year may also be a factor causing the South Korean tech giant to reassess.
In addition to launching a budget model for the Fold 6, Samsung is also planning to launch a budget model for the Flip 7 when it launches next year, so that plan may still be in progress.
