In January 2003, Steve Jobs announced that Apple was developing its own browser: Safari. Prior to this, Mac systems used Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer as their default browsers.
The first official ("out-of-beta") version of Safari was released in June 2003. In April 2005, Safari became the default browser on Mac systems.
Like many Apple products, Safari is known for its ease of use and clean design. Safari supports Mac and Windows systems.

Safari 7/6.1 was released on June 10, 2013.
Safari 7 (for OS X Mavericks) and Safari 6.1 (for Lion and Mountain Lion) were released with OS X Mavericks on October 22, 2013.

Safari 5 was released on June 7, 2010. Safari 5 runs on Mac and Windows. New Features:
- Nitro JavaScript Engine -
- The Mac version of Safari 5 is powered by the Nitro JavaScript engine, which executes JavaScript faster than Safari 4 30%.
- Just like Google’s Chrome browser, the DNS (Domain Name System) prefetching feature improves the time it takes to load new web pages. speed, and improved history page caching to make returns to these pages more responsive.
- Presents articles through a new scrollable display interface, eliminating redundant content and confusing information, regardless of single page or multi-page articles will become easier to read. When Safari 5 detects an article, users can click the Reader icon in the smart address bar to display the entire article for clear, uninterrupted reading, with the ability to enlarge, print, or email it.
HTML5 Features - More than a dozen powerful new HTML5 features, such as full-screen playback of HTML5 videos and support for closed captions, allow web developers to create Rich media experience. Other new HTML5 features added to Safari 5 include HTML5 location tags, HTML5 page splitting elements, HTML5 drag attributes, HTML5 form validation, HTML5 Ruby, HTML5 AJAX history, EventSource and WebSocket, etc.
Secure Extensions - The new free Safari Developer Program allows developers to customize extensions based on standard web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript and enhanced Safari 5. The new Extension Creator in Safari 5 simplifies the development, installation and packaging of extension tools. To enhance security and stability, Safari extensions run in a sandbox, are signed with Apple's digital certificates, and only run in the browser.
Built-in Bing Search - Choose Google, Yahoo! or Bing as the search service for the Safari search bar.
