I have used Xshell, there is a free version. I usually only use it when my own computer is not around. The direct download comes and then it is directly connected to the Linux server. There is no setting or anything like that.

Under normal circumstances, Ubuntu/Mac will SSH directly to the server from the terminal, which is very direct. Therefore, I personally think that using *nix is the best way, and the mentioned problem will not be a problem.
