How to index/list a directory in GitHub Pages

I have a Github Pages website. I'm trying to add a directory index like you can enable on an apache website.

You must provide the HTML file containing the table of contents yourself - you can write (and update) this file yourself, or you can write a GitHub action that automatically regenerates the HTML file after each commit.
