The server I purchased is 32-bit Ubuntu, so does the Ubuntu I install on vnware also have to be 32-bit? Also, how do I upload my own code to the ftp directory? This comes with the system. Do I need to clear it and put my own code in it?

Don’t delete it, I suggest you install vsftp, your link is sftp, or you can create a folder under home to store data
