java - When building a WordPress website, does the backend have to use php?

Recently I wanted to build a small personal website. I saw that WordPress can be used to easily build a website. I went to take a look today and found out the requirements of WordPress

Does the backend of wordpress have to use php? I usually use java.
I would like to ask if wordpress can use java as the backend. If not, is there any alternative similar to wordpress that can use java?
