According to news on May 6, in the past few years, Samsung mobile phone SoC has been using AMD GPU architecture, but it seems that it will not last long. It is expected that Samsung will launch its own GPU architecture in the next year.
Samsung released the Exynos 2200 (S5E9925) in January 2022. The integrated Xclipse 920 GPU is architecturally based on AMD RDNA2, but its performance was average due to various reasons, and the subsequent Exynos 2300 was also cancelled.
In October 2023, Samsung launched Exynos 2400 (S5E9945), with the integrated GPU Xclipse 940 architecture upgraded to RDNA3.
The Exynos 2500 (S5E9955) is also planned for the follow-up, which is expected to be released later this year or early next year. The GPU architecture will definitely continue to be upgraded, but the details are temporarily unknown.
According to the latest reliable revelations, Samsung will abandon AMD and use its own self-developed GPU architecture for the next generation of products in 2026.
The licensing agreement between Samsung and AMD was signed in 2019, and the first product was launched three years later. It will be renewed once in 2023. That is, the first signing period is valid for four years, and the second time is similar. So, Switching to a self-developed architecture in 2026 is also a reasonable time point.
The reason why I say "again" is because as early as 2015, Samsung had tried to develop its own GPU, code-named "Mongoose", which happened to be Qualcomm Krait. natural enemies, but ultimately died without a cure.
To a certain extent, it can be said that self-developed GPUs are more difficult than self-developed CPUs. Apple’s self-developed GPUs have not been successful.
This time it depends on how far Samsung can go.
