Mobile phone activation market share indicates the proportion of the number of newly activated mobile phones of a certain brand to the total market in a specific period. This indicator is usually used to measure the popularity and market share of a mobile phone brand or operating system in the market.

According to CIRP’s latest report, in the U.S. smartphone market, Apple’s iPhone’s new activation share dropped significantly from last year, falling to its lowest level in six years.

The report shows that while Apple’s existing smartphone user base may be higher than its recent share of new activations in the U.S. market, the latter has declined significantly.

Data shows that in the first and second quarters of 2023, Apple’s new activation share in the US market once reached a peak of 40%. However, as of the first quarter of 2024, this number has dropped to 33%.

This means that in the United States, for every 3 new smartphones activated, 2 belong to the Android camp. According to CIRP data, the last time Apple had such a low proportion of activations was back in 2017.

CIRP believes that one of the main reasons for the decline in activation rates may be the improvement in iPhone quality over the past few years and the decrease in new features. Another potential factor may be that "more transparent mobile phone purchase plans have prompted many smartphone users to postpone the upgrade cycle," and this may have a more significant impact on iPhones than Android phones.

Although Apple’s iPhone once led the U.S. market, the competitiveness of Android phones is increasing, especially in the newly activated market share. This may prompt Apple to re-evaluate its product strategy in response to changing market demands and competitive conditions.
