How to replace an existing wallpaper instead of deleting it
If you don't want to add more wallpapers to your lock screen collection, just replace the existing wallpaper with a new one. This feature only works if your existing wallpaper was created using the Photos option in the Add New Wallpaper screen.

If so, you can replace the existing image in your current wallpaper with another image saved in the iPhone Photos app. Since iOS allows you to customize your lock screen and home screen wallpapers separately, you can follow any of the methods below to change your wallpaper background.

Method 1: Change lock screen and home screen wallpaper
When you apply a new lock screen from an existing wallpaper, the changes are applied not only to the lock screen but also to the home screen . You can't change the lock screen separately without modifying the home screen wallpaper, but you can change the latter later to keep two different wallpapers for the lock screen and home screen. If you just want to change the home screen wallpaper on your iPhone, you can check out method 2.

You can change your lock screen wallpaper two ways – either directly from your iPhone’s lock screen or using the Settings app on iOS. The process is more or less the same, but we'll explain them here.

Note: You can replace the background on the lock screen only if your existing lock screen background is applied from an image in your iPhone photo library.

1.A: From the iOS Lock Screen

To change the lock screen wallpaper, use Face ID to unlock your phone, but don't go to the Home screen yet. To do this, simply press the side button, show your face to your iPhone, and unlock the lock screen. Now, long press anywhere on the lock screen to unlock. When the lock screen enters edit mode, tap Customize at the bottom of the screen. On the Customize Wallpaper screen, click the Lock Screen preview on the left. You are now in the lock screen customization screen. Within the Customize screen, you'll see all lock screen elements in boxes on the top half of the screen. To replace the existing wallpaper, click the picture icon in the lower left corner. On the next screen, you will see all the pictures in your iPhone photo library. From here, select the background you want to add as your new wallpaper. The selected background will now appear within the Customize screen. You can drag around the wallpaper with two fingers to reposition it, or use a pinch gesture to enlarge the background to get the look you want. When you're ready to save the background as your lock screen background, tap Done in the upper right corner. iOS will now apply your new wallpaper to the Lock and Home screens, and you'll see a preview of it among other wallpapers above the Customize option. You can return to the lock screen by tapping the new wallpaper. The new wallpaper will now be applied to your lock screen.

1.B: From the iOS Settings app

To change the lock screen wallpaper, open the Settings app on your iPhone. Within Settings, go to Wallpapers. Within this screen, you will see a preview of the lock screen and home screen wallpapers on the left and right respectively. To change the lock screen wallpaper, click Customize in the preview on the left. Now you will reach the lock screen customization screen and you will see all the lock screen elements in boxes in the upper half of the screen. When you're ready to save the background as your lock screen background, tap Done in the upper right corner. iOS will now apply the new wallpaper to your lock screen and home screen, and it should show up as a preview within the wallpaper screen in the Settings app.

Method Two: Change Home Screen Wallpaper
If you only want to replace the home screen wallpaper without replacing the background set on the lock screen, you can do this from the lock screen itself or from the iOS settings.

Note: This method is also useful when you want to apply two different backgrounds as wallpapers for your lock screen and home screen.

2.A: From the iOS Lock Screen

1. To change the wallpaper on your device's home screen, access the lock screen by swiping down from the top left corner of your iPhone.

2. When the lock screen appears, long press anywhere on the blank space of the screen.

3. When the lock screen enters editing mode, tap Customize at the bottom of the screen.

4. Now, you will see two previews on your screen – one for the lock screen and another for the home screen. Since you want to change the home screen wallpaper, click Home Screen Preview on the right.

5. You will now reach the Customize screen with options at the bottom that allow you to apply a solid color, color gradient, blur/unblur wallpaper, or add another photo as your home screen background. You can choose to apply your home screen wallpaper from any of the following options:

Pairing: Replaces the existing background with the one you applied on the lock screen.

Blur: When selecting the Pair or Photo option, you can apply this option to blur the image that has been set as the lock screen background. This setting cannot be used with any other options, namely Color or Gradient.

6. Except "Photos", you can confirm all the above options by clicking "Done" in the upper right corner. If you select Photos, you must select a background image to apply to your home screen.

7. After adding the selected image to the home screen preview, tap "Done" in the upper right corner to apply it.

8. To confirm your action, click "Done" in the upper right corner of the next screen.

9. You should now see the newly applied wallpaper on your iPhone’s home screen.

2.B: From the iOS Settings app

1. To change the wallpaper on your device's home screen, open the Settings app on your iPhone.

2. Within "Settings", scroll down and select "Wallpaper".

3. On the next screen, you will see a preview of the lock screen and home screen on the left and right respectively. Here, click “Customize” under the preview on the right.

Pairing: Replaces the existing background with the one you applied on the lock screen.
Color: This option allows you to apply a solid color of your choice as the home screen background.

Gradient: Selecting this option allows you to set a color gradient of any color as your home screen background.

Photo: This option allows you to choose a different image from your photo library as your home screen background.
Blur: When selecting the Pair or Photo option, you can apply this option to blur the image that has been set as the lock screen background. This setting cannot be used with any other options, namely Color or Gradient.

5. Except "Photos", you can confirm all the above options by clicking "Done" in the upper right corner. If you select Photos, you must select a background image to apply to your home screen.

6. After adding the selected image to the home screen preview, tap "Done" in the upper right corner to apply it.

7. To confirm your action, click "Done" in the upper right corner of the next screen.

8. You will now return to the wallpaper screen which will now show you a preview of the new background set as your home screen wallpaper.

FAQ
Why can't I delete the current wallpaper on my iPhone?
iOS only allows you to delete wallpapers you create from your iPhone's lock screen. You won't be able to delete the current wallpaper on your device from iPhone Settings; you can only replace a custom Home/Lock screen background from there.

When you try to remove the current wallpaper from your iPhone's lock screen but are unable to do so using the guide above, it must be because your current wallpaper is the only existing wallpaper on the device. iOS does not allow you to delete this wallpaper unless you create new wallpapers for the lock screen and home screen.

If your current wallpaper was created from a local image saved on your iPhone, there is a way to replace that image with a new background you captured on your iPhone camera or downloaded from the app.

Can I use two different wallpapers for the lock screen and home screen?
Yes. You can apply different wallpapers separately for your iPhone's lock screen and home screen. This can be done by first replacing the existing home screen background by applying your desired lock screen wallpaper. Once you've done this, you can go ahead and change the home screen wallpaper individually. The steps to do this have been explained in the section above, so you can easily achieve this result in a minute or two.
