AMD's efforts fail to bring HDMI 2.1+ functionality to Linux open source driver

According to news from this site on February 29, AMD engineers have been negotiating with the HDMI Forum to provide a solution to implement HDMI 2.1 functionality through its open source Linux kernel driver.

AMD Linux engineer Alex Deucher said that the HDMI Forum has not accepted AMD's request for an open source HDMI 2.1 driver. Deucher regrets that open source HDMI 2.1 is currently not possible because HDMI Forum regulations limit this progress.

Phoronix exposed a vulnerability in HDMI 2.1 three years ago involving 4K@120Hz or 5K@240Hz configurations. While AMD has the ability to address these issues, it requires approval from the HDMI Forum. Due to the nature of open source drivers, which means AMD will expose HDMI data, the HDMI Forum rejected AMD's request.

In other words, all open source AMD GPU drivers are not compatible with HDMI 2.1 functionality due to unavailable fixes. Perhaps this is why AMD graphics cards now prefer using the license-free DisplayPort interface instead of HDMI.
