According to Bloomberg, Tesla plans to use idle equipment from CATL to open a small factory in Nevada to expand the scale of its battery production project. According to people familiar with the matter, Tesla is working to increase the production of MEGAPACK batteries.
According to reports, Tesla plans to purchase some equipment from CATL and install it in Sparks. Tesla stated that they will fully own and control the factory and bear all construction costs. CATL employees will only assist in equipment debugging and will not participate in other work.
CATL began supplying power batteries to Tesla in July 2020. In 2021, Tesla became CATL's largest customer, purchasing lithium batteries worth 13 billion yuan, accounting for 10% of CATL's total revenue.
According to CATL’s 2022 annual report, Tesla has become its largest customer for two consecutive years. In 2022, Tesla contributed 38 billion yuan to CATL’s lithium battery sales, accounting for 11.59% of total revenue.
CATL’s 2023 annual performance forecast shows that the net profit in 2023 is expected to be 42.5 billion yuan-45.5 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 38.31%-48.07%.
Tesla’s fourth-quarter revenue was US$25.17 billion, earnings per share were US$0.71, and gross profit margin was 17.6%. Free cash flow was $2.06 billion. Net profit attributable to ordinary shareholders was US$7.928 billion, a year-on-year increase of 115%. Not according to U.S. GAAP, net profit attributable to common shareholders was US$2.485 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 39%.
