Imagine that part of the propellers of a quad-rotor drone cannot rotate during flight. How can it still fly safely?

After years of research, the scientific research team of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics has made important breakthroughs in fault-tolerant control technology for multi-rotor UAVs, finding answers to the above problems. Relevant results were recently published in the IEEE Transactions on Robotics, an important international academic journal in the field of robotics.

Multi-rotor drones are widely used and can be used for industrial inspections, fire rescue, package delivery, photography and videography, etc. It has vertical takeoff and landing and hovering capabilities, and can operate flexibly in small spaces.

However, with the rapid popularity of drones, "strike" crashes to the ground often occur due to extreme weather and collision with obstacles, causing losses to people and property. Therefore, improving the flight safety of drones has become an urgent problem for the industry to solve.

The Reliable Flight Control Team of the School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering of Beihang University used quad-rotor drones to conduct research and successfully designed a passive disaster recovery control algorithm based on the stress characteristics of the aircraft actuator after sudden failure. The team found through experimental verification that after the "control brain" of the quadcopter drone is equipped with this algorithm, even if three propellers fail, it can still maintain safe flight and achieve a controllable return. Dr. Ke Chenxu, a member of the team and Beihang University, said that the relevant results can be applied to multi-rotor UAVs such as six-rotor and eight-rotor drones.

Professor from Beihang University said that the results will be used in the research and development of new multi-rotor drones to improve their flight safety performance.
