OpenAI is preparing to enter the hardware field by developing artificial intelligence (AI) devices.
#OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly working with design studio LoveForm to build the device. LoveForm will make significant contributions to the design and user experience, while OpenAI provides the technology powering the device.
The project is in its early stages and has been actively seeking professionals to form a team for the device. Most recently, LoveForm hired Tang Tan, a veteran design executive at Apple, to shape the look and functionality of OpenAI devices.
In 2023, we saw a variety of new AI devices hitting the market, including Meta’s RayBan smart glasses and the Humane AI Pin. Both devices are early examples of how artificial intelligence can provide new ways to interact with and understand our environment. Each device also highlights the challenges that exist in AI hardware; the success of AI wearables depends on their ability to deliver real-world benefits without adding complexity.
No artificial intelligence wearable device provider has yet achieved this, but OpenAI’s entry into the hardware field with the support of Apple’s design philosophy can provide a new generation of artificial intelligence that is more intuitive, efficient, and more in line with human experience. Smart devices lay the foundation.
It is believed that one of OpenAI's first devices will be home hardware, which means OpenAI will compete directly with Amazon's Alexa and Google Home. Both devices have seen some level of adoption around the world and are often cited for their convenience in controlling smart home functions, providing entertainment, and assisting with daily tasks through voice commands. In other words, these devices allow users to turn their homes into "smart homes," i.e., houses equipped with various machines that can automate tasks typically handled by humans, such as controlling the temperature. , lighting and security/surveillance systems.
In a smart home, all the devices that power the house are typically interconnected and can be accessed through a central point, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop, gaming console, or Amazon Alexa or Google Home and other artificial intelligence devices.
Challenges and Future of AI Home Devices
However, the question remains: Do consumers want another home device? Especially when the most popular use case for home AI devices is smart home management, a task that smartphones already manage well.
When home devices are designed to solve use cases outside of home management or serve as artificial intelligence voice assistants in use cases outside of home automation, the results are less than impressive. For example, Siri, the AI voice assistant developed by Apple, remains underutilized despite being on the market for more than a decade.
While AI devices and wearables are futuristic and beautiful, the future of these devices depends on their ability to deliver transformative user experiences that surpass the convenience and efficiency of existing alternatives.
