According to news from this site on January 11, at this year’s CES 2024 exhibition, MSI launched a Spatium M580 PCIe 5.0 solid-state drive. This hard drive actually uses a liquid cooling system.

The full name of this hard drive is MSI Spatium M580 PCIe NVMe M.2 2 TB Frozr Liquid. According to official promotional materials, its read speed is as high as 14,000 MB/s. The write speed has also reached 12,000 MB/s, which is undoubtedly amazingly fast, but is this additional performance improvement really worth the extra cost and risk?

This site noticed that the Spatium M570 Pro Frozr SSD released by MSI last year is equipped with a large air-cooled radiator. The drive has a sequential read speed of up to 12,400 MB/s. With sequential write speeds of 11,800 MB/s, MSI says it's ideal for demanding content creators, professionals, and gamers.

In contrast, the M580 uses a miniature all-in-one water cooling solution, including a thermal base, an integrated water pump, a micro radiator, and a blower fan to dissipate heat away from the cooling fins. The spec sheet states that the drive should fit into any M.2 slot and that the heatsink has full contact with the controller and flash module.

Currently, the price and launch date of the M580 have not been announced, but MSI said the drive will be available in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacity versions.

The CES exhibition has always been a platform to showcase novel ideas. Whether the M580 can be launched in its current form is difficult to say. MSI may first collect feedback from the community before making a decision.

Of course, liquid cooling can further improve the performance of this already super-fast storage device, but at this point, the performance improvement is already minimal. While cool from a hardware enthusiast perspective, this liquid cooling system seems to be more about showmanship.

For most users, a high-quality PCIe Gen 4 M.2 SSD is sufficient for daily use, can stay cool even with a basic passive heat sink, and is more affordable. Therefore, unless you are an enthusiast who pursues extreme performance, you don't need to pay for a liquid-cooled SSD.
