Siemens and Microsoft collaborate on cross-industry AI adoption

Siemens and Microsoft are collaborating to promote cross-industry applications of AI, announced at CES 2024. Siemens CEO Roland Busch delivered a speech at the opening ceremony and launched Siemens Industrial Copilot, a prolific AI assistant designed to improve human-machine collaboration and productivity and promote the development of different industries.

The cooperation between these two industry giants is a recognition of AI technology. Among them, Siemens Industrial Copilot is a product specially designed for the manufacturing industry. It utilizes Microsoft's Azure OpenAI service and Siemens' Xcelerator digital business platform. The goal of this collaboration is to revolutionize industrial processes and provide more efficient solutions. This kind of cooperation is of great significance to the digital transformation of the industrial field and is also an affirmation of the application of AI technology in the manufacturing industry.

Busch also demonstrated how Sony and Siemens are using XR headsets for immersive engineering to help visualize engineering designs.

"Technology exists quietly, but it is everywhere." Busch said, "This technology is called industrial avatar. It will redefine reality in a new way and bring profound changes to everyone's daily life. ."

Microsoft CEO Nadella issued a statement, saying that GenAI provides a unique opportunity to accelerate industrial innovation. Based on its long-term cooperation with Siemens, Microsoft will combine its AI technology in the cloud field and Siemens' expertise in the industrial field to develop new AI tools to enhance the capabilities of front-line employees and knowledge workers. Siemens Industry Copilot will be the starting point for this cooperation.

Busch said in a statement that the common goal of working with Microsoft is to use GenAI technology to enhance customer capabilities. This collaboration is expected to revolutionize the way companies design, develop, manufacture and operate, promoting the widespread use of human-machine collaboration. Through this collaboration, engineers can accelerate code development, increase innovation, and address the shortage of skilled labor.

According to Busch, it could take 10 years to build a new generation of aircraft. Although simulation can be used to speed up progress, completion will still take time. As AI advances, simulations and efficiencies will get better.

Siemens Industry said that through cooperation with Microsoft, their Copilot capabilities can simplify complex automated code generation, optimization and debugging processes. The advent of this technology allows work that would have taken weeks to be completed, now done in minutes. Siemens’ digital platform and Microsoft’s AI services play a key role in this progress, and customers’ data control is guaranteed in the process without the need for training with basic AI models.

Copilot's commitment extends beyond code generation to providing detailed maintenance instructions to employees. It takes industrial operations to the next level by providing engineers with instant access to simulation tools through natural language interaction to improve productivity and efficiency in industrial operations.

The collaboration is not limited to manufacturing, as both companies envision AI partners helping professionals in different industries, including infrastructure, transportation and healthcare. Early adopters like automotive supplier Schaeffler AG have embraced GenAI, using it to enhance the engineering phase and reduce downtime in operations.

AWS is also partnering with Siemens on this journey. Siemens believes that the virtual world is not just a place where you escape from the real world, but the industrial virtual world is a place that makes the real world better.

It will join the OpenU.S. Alliance, which is being promoted by Nvidia and its allies. OpenU.S. was originally created by Pixar and then made open source. Sony also showed off its new content creation head-mounted display.

Klaus Rosenfeld, CEO of Schaeffler Group, said in a statement: “Siemens Industrial Copilot will increase the efficiency of our teams, reduce repetitive tasks and unleash creativity – this is an exciting collaboration with Siemens and Microsoft. Excited to work together."

The Siemens TeamCenter app for Microsoft Teams will enhance virtual collaboration by connecting product design and manufacturing lifecycle capabilities, bridging the gap between frontline employees and engineering teams. This integration is designed to Make data more accessible to factory and field service personnel, facilitating their seamless contribution to the design and manufacturing process.

Siemens will announce more information about Siemens Industrial Copilot at the SPS Expo in Nuremberg, Germany, in November 2023.
