How does the String.split() method in Java limit the length of the split array?

The String class in Java provides the split() method for splitting a string into an array. When splitting a string, sometimes we need to limit the length of the split array. So, how do we limit the length of the array in the split() method? This will be explained below with specific code examples.

In Java, the split() method of the String class has two overloaded forms:

  1. split(String regex)
  2. split(String regex, int limit)

The first form does not limit the length of the arrays split into. It splits a string into multiple substrings based on a regular expression parameter and returns an array of strings.
The following is a simple code example:

String str = "apple,banana,grape,melon";
String[] fruits = str.split(",");
for (String fruit : fruits) {
    System.out.println(fruit);
}

Output result:

apple
banana
grape
melon

As you can see, the split() method splits the string based on commas and splits the substrings Strings are stored in string arrays. In this case, the length of the split array is not limited.

The second form of split() method can limit the length of the array that is split. It accepts two parameters. The first parameter is a regular expression, used to specify the splitting rule; the second parameter is a limit of type int, used to limit the length of the split array.
The following is a code example to limit the length of the array:

String str = "apple,banana,grape,melon";
String[] fruits = str.split(",", 2);
for (String fruit : fruits) {
    System.out.println(fruit);
}

Output result:

apple
banana,grape,melon

As you can see, by passing in commas and 2 as parameters in the split() method, we The length of the array is limited to 2. The first substring after splitting is "apple", and the second substring is "banana,grape,melon".

It should be noted that if the number of commas in the string exceeds the limit of the array length minus 1, the excess part will be used as part of the last array element. In the above example, the string "banana,grape,melon" that should have been split into two elements is stored as one array element.

In actual development, the split() method can be flexibly used to split strings according to specific needs, and the granularity and results of splitting can be controlled by limiting the length of the split arrays.
