November 2 News The British government said on Wednesday that it will invest 225 million pounds ($273 million) to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputer, highlighting the UK's pursuit of catching up with technological powerhouses such as the United States and becoming the " leader” ambition.

It is reported that the University of Bristol will build this supercomputer called Isambard-ai, named after the 19th century British engineer Isambard Brunel. It was the first day of the UK Artificial Intelligence Safety Summit held at Bletchley Park.

The British government plans to invest nearly $300 million to develop supercomputers and strive to become an AI leader

The London government announced that Isambard-AI will become the most advanced computer in the UK. Once completed, it is claimed it will be 10 times faster than the fastest computer in the UK currently. This computer will use 5448 GH200 Grace Hopper super chips, which are powerful artificial intelligence chips manufactured by the American semiconductor giant Nvidia

In addition, US IT giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise will help build the computer, with the goal of eventually connecting it to Cambridge University's newly announced supercomputer called Dawn. The latter, jointly made by Dell and British company StackPC, will be powered by more than 1,000 Intel chips that use water cooling technology to reduce power consumption. Operations are expected to begin within the next two months.

It is said that its capacity is more than 30 times that of the largest public artificial intelligence computing tool in the UK. The UK government hopes the two combined supercomputers will lead to breakthroughs in fusion energy, healthcare and climate modelling.

According to the government, the machines will be operational by summer 2024, helping researchers analyze advanced artificial intelligence models to test their safety properties and drive breakthroughs in drug development and clean energy.

The British government has previously allocated 1 billion pounds to invest in the semiconductor industry to ensure the country's chip supply and reduce dependence on East Asia's most important commercial microchips.
