Microsoft Edge's Mica redesign finally returns on Windows 11
With the retirement of Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge remains the only browser supported by Microsoft on Windows. To make it more competitive with Google Chrome and other browsers, Microsoft has been adding new features to Edge.
As spotted by Leopeva64 on X and verified by us, Microsoft is bringing the mica effect back to Edge’s title bar and toolbar.
For those who don’t know, Mica is a dynamic material exclusive to Windows 11 that bridges the gap between themes and desktop wallpapers by painting the background of your application windows with the desktop background. This change can be enabled via a flag in the latest canary version of Microsoft Edge on Windows 11.
To enable the effect, users can follow these steps:
- Update to the latest Edge build (0.2167.0.11 or higher on the latest Windows 120 Canary build ).
- Open the flags page by navigating to "edge://flags"
- Find the "Show Windows 11 visuals in title bars and toolbars" page.
- Enable the flag and restart Edge.
- Go to Settings and open the Appearance tab.
- Enable the "Show Windows 11 visual effects (preview) in title bar and toolbars" option and restart the browser.
- The mica effect will now be visible on the browser.

#While Microsoft was late to the party, Google shipped the mica effect to Chrome months ago.
Other changes coming to Microsoft Edge
In addition to the Mica Effect, Microsoft is also bringing other changes to Edge. With the advent of browser version 118, Microsoft has made some changes to Edge.
For example, the Bing icon on the sidebar has been removed and replaced by Copilot, Microsoft’s new AI assistant. Microsoft has also refreshed the internal pages of Bing Chat AI to specify that Bing is now Copilot for the Edge browser.
This does not change the existing behavior of AI in Edge, you can still find all content of Copilot in the browser, including PDF pages and mini context menus.
In addition to Copilot branding changes, Microsoft has confirmed the following new changes in Edge:
- Microsoft Edge for Business Banner is being deprecated. In the business version of Edge, the built-in banner will no longer be visible.
- A new version of the Find on Page feature is rolling out, which allows users to quickly find a word or phrase on a web page, even if it's misspelled. Microsoft is believed to be using AI magic to improve the Find on Page feature.
- New Smart Screen policies allow administrators to control and create a dictionary of file types that are exempt from Smart Screens.
- New update strategy, allowing more granular control.
You can always try these changes by updating Edge from Settings > About.
