Microsoft announces OneDrive will be compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop remote app

Until today, OneDrive was only available on Azure virtual desktops with non-persistent desktops. OneDrive not working properly with Azure Virtual Desktop RemoteApps. Microsoft today announced the preview of OneDrive and RemoteApp in Azure Virtual Desktop. This latest support will allow users to access and sync their OneDrive files when using RemoteApp.

Here's how this feature works:

  • When a user launches a remote app, the OneDrive icon will be integrated into the taskbar of their local Windows device.
  • If the user launches another RemoteApp from the same host pool on the same session host, the same OneDrive instance is used and the other instance does not start.
  • If the user signs in with a Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) login, the user will automatically be signed in to OneDrive and synchronization will be initiated.

Microsoft also revealed that OneDrive support for Azure Virtual Desktop RemoteApps is currently only available on Windows 11.
