Microsoft CEO Nadella slams Google while sharing his huge concerns about AI

Microsoft has been a leader in AI, taking it from theory and making it very real, the company elaborated in a 2019 blog post My own plan more or less predicted the future.

"Just a few years ago, AI was largely relegated to universities and research labs, a fascinating computer science concept with little use in mainstream business. Today, AI is being integrated into everything from refrigerators to your favorite workout apps," the company shared.

This is a pure AI framework that does not include the many ways in which this technology can go wrong. To be fair, Microsoft has made building responsible AI-based products a core mission, something the company spelled out in a 2019 blog post.

The company wrote: “Our AI tools and technology are designed to benefit everyone, at every level of every business. They are used in workplaces, home offices, academic institutions, research labs and manufacturing facilities, they are helping everyone from scientists and salespeople to farmers, software developers and security practitioners.”

Microsoft’s leaders are well aware that AI can go wrong places and the dangers that come with it, they may have foreseen how the technology could be used to do everything from cheating on college essays to replacing actors with virtual ones (as well as the many more nefarious potential uses of deepfakes) .

problems between Nadella and Google

Nadella transformed Microsoft after taking over from former CEO Steve Ballmer. Rather than isolating the company from competitors, Nadella is open to working with fellow competitors like Apple.

However, the CEO remains at odds with Alphabet and testified in a recent antitrust lawsuit against Google. In a partial transcript of that testimony, shared by GeekWire, Nadella made it clear that he believed Alphabet used its outsized influence to stifle competition (an accusation Alphabet apparently disagrees with).

"The whole concept that users have a choice, that they go from one website to another, or search after search... it's (totally) false." It's the default... you get up in the morning , brush your teeth, and search on Google. So as this habit develops, the only way to change it is to change the default settings.

Nadella also believes that Alphabet is selling a false narrative that OEM partners have choices, when in fact they do not.

“Google has the carrot, it has the stick… ‘If you don’t use us as your primary browser, we will remove Google Play.’ Without Google Play, an Android phone is a brick, so here’s the thing Something that is impossible to overcome. No OEM would do that," he said.

Nadella shares his concerns about AI

Nadella also shared a surprising fear about AI that may be different from what you expect.

Despite my enthusiasm, I am very concerned about the new perspectives that artificial intelligence may bring. In fact, as defaults intensified, the vicious cycle I found myself in was likely to get worse. Publisher content may be locked. So if there are exclusive content deals going on, as we speak... all content today, at least the content that is accessible to everyone and can be trained on large models, has the potential to become exclusive content. "He shared that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is concerned that content now available to everyone — real knowledge — could become proprietary. This doesn’t have to be about angry enslavement by bots Humans, but a more subtle danger that is harder to prevent
