There are two methods to upgrade MySQL on Windows. They are listed below -
Using MySQL Installer
Using Windows ZIP Archive Distribution
The MySQL installer does not support upgrades between the community version and the commercial version. If such an upgrade is required, it can be accomplished using the ZIP archive method.
Let us understand how to upgrade MySQL using MySQL installer. This is considered the best approach when the current server installation is performed with the current server installation and the upgrade occurs within the current version series.
The MySQL installer does not support upgrades between version series, such as from 5.7 to 8.0, etc. It does not provide an upgrade indicator to tell users to upgrade. The steps are as follows:
Start the MySQL installer.
In the dashboard, click Catalog and it will download the latest changes that may have occurred in the catalog.
You can upgrade an installed server only if the dashboard displays an arrow next to the version number.
Now click "Upgrade".
Those products that have new versions will appear in the list.
Deselect all products except the MySQL Server product unless otherwise Products also need to be upgraded. Now click "Next".
Now click on "Execute" and this will start the download.
When it completes it has been fully downloaded, click "Next" and the upgrade will begin
When upgrading to MySQL 8.0.16 or later, the option to skip the system table upgrade checksum process may be displayed.
li>Now configure the server.
Now let’s see how to upgrade MySQL using Windows ZIP distribution.
Download the latest version of MySQL Windows ZIP Archive Distribution from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/.
If the server is installed and running, stop. If the server has been installed as a service, use the following command to stop the service -
C:\> SC STOP mysqld_service_name
In addition to this, you can also use the "NET STOP mysql_service_name" command. If MySQL is not running as a service, you can use "mysqladmin" to stop it. Let's look at this command -
C:\> "C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.7\bin\mysqladmin" -u root shutdown
If the MySQL root user account has a password, you can call "mysqladmin" with the "-p" option and enter the password when prompted. Need to extract ZIP archive. An existing MySQL installation can be overwritten, usually located in C:/mysql, or it can be installed in a different directory, such as C:/mysql8.
Now, the server needs to be restarted. This can be done using any of the commands shown below -
SC START mysqld_service_name
(or)
NET START mysqld_service_name
NOTE: The above is used when MySQL is running as a service.
If you use MySQL directly, call "mysqld".
