At the opening ceremony and main forum, Meng Pu, Chairman of Qualcomm China, delivered a speech on the theme of "5G and AI Empowering the Digital Future"
The following is the content of the speech:
Dear leaders, guests, and industry partners, good afternoon! It is an honor to participate in the China Radio Conference, discuss with everyone the dynamics and trends of wireless technology and industry development, and share the work Qualcomm has done in working with partners to promote high-quality development of the digital economy with wireless innovation
In the more than four years since 5G has been commercialized, China has built the world's largest 5G network. Terminal products have become increasingly rich. 5G has been integrated into more than 60% of the national economy. The breadth and depth of applications have continued to increase, promoting the integration of the digital economy and the real economy. Deep integration. Currently, the third version of the global 5G standard, 3GPP Release 17, has been frozen, which also represents the successful completion of the first phase of 5G technology evolution. Release 18 is in progress, and Release 18 to Release 20 will form the second phase of the 5G standard, which is 5G Advanced.
Based on existing 5G technology, 5G-Advanced will support more expansion features, such as RedCap for lower complexity IoT terminals and expansion in more fields, enhanced industrial IoT, non-terrestrial networks, etc. This will enable 5G to enter a wider range of industries and applications.
Taking wireless connection technology as an example, Qualcomm provides an industry-leading combination of connection technologies, including 5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. In order to better support the new round of 5G innovation, Qualcomm launched two new 5G modems and radio frequency system chips in February this year.
Snapdragon X75 also achieves downlink transmission speeds of up to 7.5Gbps, setting the world’s fastest 5G transmission speed record in the Sub-6GHz band, further breaking through the boundaries of 5G performance. Snapdragon X35 is the world’s first 5G RedCap modem and radio frequency system. It has excellent energy efficiency, supports excellent positioning accuracy, and helps 5G expand to smart watches, entry-level IoT terminals and other rich use cases.
Another key technology developing in parallel with 5G is AI. With the support of 5G technical features, the rich data generated by network-connected terminals can be shared to the cloud in real time, making large-scale data analysis and machine learning possible. The terminal experience will also benefit from the increasing content, processing power and storage space of the cloud. At the same time, terminal-side AI that collaborates with the cloud is developing rapidly with the help of 5G, bringing higher privacy, reliability and lower latency, becoming a powerful supplement to cloud intelligence. The coordinated development of 5G and AI will help release each other's greater technological potential, generate revolutionary technological progress and application innovation, and accelerate the digital transformation of all walks of life.
This year, generative AI has become the focus of the industry. Qualcomm believes that future artificial intelligence will adopt a hybrid AI architecture. AI will run collaboratively on the cloud, edge cloud and terminal side to redistribute computing and processing power in the entire system in the most effective way to achieve more powerful, more efficient and highly optimized AI
AI’s benefits to the entire wireless communication system are very obvious. AI can be distributed in multiple links from the cloud to the end, supporting efficient network planning, continuous optimization, and enhanced service experience; and through end-to-end AI collaboration, the entire wireless Communication system performance. For example, with the support of AI, terminals can more comprehensively grasp the characteristics and changing trends of wireless channels, making channel status prediction and feedback more accurate, helping to improve throughput and other key performance indicators.
With multiple advantages such as better cost, higher performance, privacy and security, terminal-side AI has become the key to empowering hybrid AI and allowing generative AI to achieve large-scale expansion. As powerful generative AI models continue to shrink and terminal-side processing capabilities continue to improve, the potential of hybrid AI will further grow. Today, AI models with more than 1 billion parameters can be run on mobile phones, and their performance and accuracy have reached levels similar to those in the cloud. In the near future, models with 10 billion parameters or more will be able to run on terminals.
During the MWC at the beginning of this year, Qualcomm showed the world's first Stable Diffusion terminal-side demonstration running on an Android phone. Through full-stack AI optimization using Qualcomm's AI software stack, we successfully implemented Stable Diffusion running on smartphones. It is able to perform 20 steps of inference in 15 seconds and generate a 512x512 pixel image. This inference speed is the fastest on smartphones, comparable to cloud latency, and there are no restrictions on user text input
We are also continuing to improve the model parameters that the terminal side can support to release the greater potential of terminal-side AI. In June this year, Qualcomm demonstrated a terminal-side demonstration of ControlNet running on the world's fastest mobile phone. ControlNet is a model that generates images from images. In this use case, the user inputs an image and a text prompt, and the vase in the picture can be turned into a Renaissance painting. We believe that cutting-edge technologies such as terminal-side AI are expected to open a new innovation cycle and bring greater development opportunities to the industry.
The combination of 5G and artificial intelligence will accelerate the digital transformation of all walks of life, become a dual driving force for the growth of the digital economy, and further accelerate the arrival of the digital future. In the past year, Qualcomm has worked closely with China's industrial partners and achieved some important results in related fields
5G is an important cornerstone for building a world of intelligent interconnection of all things, and the Metaverse is one of the important application scenarios that demonstrate the potential of 5G. We believe that XR terminals will become the entrance to the metaverse and a new generation of mobile computing platform with broad prospects. Thanks to the integration of 5G, AI and The upgrade has far-reaching impacts, including the transformation of traditional sports into smart sports.
Qualcomm, Sinobo Group and China Mobile collaborated last year to demonstrate a 5G unbounded XR event experience solution, opening up a new path for the construction of "smart workplaces". This year, the three parties have cooperated again and achieved new results. For the first time, the network industry integrated Metaverse application experience based on the 5G live network has been achieved, which means that the practical application of the Industrial Metaverse has made important progress
From the video below, you can see that with the full-area coverage of 5G and the unbounded XR "business-network-computing power" integrated solution, users only need to wear a lightweight head-mounted display device. You can experience the Metaverse experience with binocular 4K-level image quality and latency as low as 20 milliseconds.
In the field of industrial manufacturing, 5G also has great potential. Through 5G, people, machines, things, systems, etc. will be fully connected to build a new manufacturing and service system covering the entire industry chain. Among them, 5G private network is a wireless solution tailored for industrial Internet applications. It has a dedicated network ID, independent architecture and support for mobile edge computing; in addition, 5G also supports ultra-reliable low-latency communication and time-sensitive Network and high-precision positioning.
Qualcomm is working with industry partners to accelerate industrial Internet innovation. Last year, Qualcomm teamed up with China Industrial Internet Research Institute, China Telecom, Quectel and other partners to launch a 5G fully connected factory project in KONE Elevator Jiangsu Kunshan Industrial Park. In response to the needs of KONE Elevator factories, it created 5G technology based on Qualcomm solutions Private network networking. At present, the "5G Fully Connected Factory" project has achieved positive practical results and implemented multiple industrial interconnection applications. At the 2023 Service Trade Fair held this month, the project was rated as a "Technology Innovation Service Demonstration Case."
In an era of growing online video traffic, especially with the upcoming wave of using generative AI to produce video content, video compression technology is becoming more and more important. Recently, Qualcomm and Tencent brought the world's first VVC mobile phone optimization demonstration to the 2023 ChinaJoy Snapdragon Theme Pavilion. VVC is the latest generation of video coding and decoding standards. By introducing high-performance algorithm strategies, VVC can save more than 35% of bandwidth compared to the previous generation of coding technology. 4K 10bit 60 frames/second (fps) ultra-high definition streaming can be achieved with only 10Mbps. High-quality image quality, equivalent to compressing the original painting 1200 times.
This demonstration is based on Tencent H.266 software decoder. Through joint optimization by Tencent and Qualcomm, it makes full use of the CPU and GPU processing capabilities of the second-generation Snapdragon 8 mobile platform, so that complex algorithms in the new generation standard can also be used. Running smoothly on the mobile platform, the overall performance of the software decoder is improved by more than 30%, and it can play 4K 10bit 60fps ultra-high-definition VVC content stably and smoothly in real time. This achievement means that users will enjoy more shocking and realistic visual effects as well as smoother game operation and viewing experience in cloud games, live broadcasts, on-demand and other applications. The era of ultra-high definition and ultra-high frames is coming. .
5G Advanced is starting a new round of 5G innovation. While accelerating the current innovative development of 5G terminals and applications with partners, Qualcomm also continues to promote the future evolution of 5G technology, contribute our technological inventions, and pave the way for 6G through unremitting innovation
"Intelligence is connected, everything grows", which expresses Qualcomm's good expectations and firm commitment to the vision of "empowering people and everything in an intelligent and interconnected world". Win-win cooperation is the main theme of the development of the digital economy. In the future, Qualcomm will work closely with partners from all walks of life to promote the application and transformation of cutting-edge technologies and build an open innovation ecosystem.
