In iOS 17 Apple has added a new feature in Messages to let loved ones know when you're home safe. It's called check-in, and here's how you use it.
Whether you're walking home after dark or going for an early morning run, you can start checking in with family or friends in Apple's Messages app to let them know When will you get home safely.
Upon your arrival, Check In automatically detects when you are home and notifies your friends. When they are alerted and the check-in has ended, you will also be notified.
If something unexpected happens and you're delayed along the way, Check Tab will even recognize that you're not making progress and check in with you, asking if you want to increase your ETA.
If you don't reply, Check In will automatically notify your friends that you didn't arrive as expected and tell them your location (if available), the route you took, and your iPhone's battery level and cellular network service in case they want to contact you. All this information is encrypted end-to-end, ensuring your privacy is maintained at all times.
To use check-in, you need to select a conversation with a trusted person, click the " " button to the left of the text input field, and select the check-in option.
From there, you can enter where you want to go and your set arrival time.
You can customize the amount of data shared. Limited shares location, network signal, and battery level, while Full shares all of that along with the route traveled, the last location your iPhone was unlocked, and the last location your Apple Watch was removed from.
When you arrive at your destination, your friends or family will be notified that you arrived safely and the check-in process will end successfully.
