Jar files in Java

JAR is a file format that helps aggregate Java class files and their associated metadata and resources into a single file.

Create JAR file - jar can use the cf command, where 'cf' means create a file.

jar cf jar_file_name files_to_compress

After creating the jar file, a default manifest file will also be created. There is only one manifest file present in the particular archive, with the extension "mf" and located in the pathname. This manifest file helps provide information about the files that are compressed/present in the package.

View JAR files - Use the 'jar tf' command to view compressed files. Here, ‘tf’ stands for view table content.

jar tf jar_file_name

Extract contents from jar files - The "xf" command can be used to extract contents from jar files. Here, ‘xf’ stands for extraction.

jar xf jar_file_name

Update jar file - The "uf" command is used for update, where "u" means to update the contents of an existing jar file. This is done by modifying the manifest file or adding new files.
