The wait is finally over. Just like they did with the Edge mode for gamers, Microsoft is finally rolling out Edge for Business, the enterprise-focused version of the browser, in the latest version (version 116, dated March 21, 2023) Stable channel.
After rigorous testing in the Release Preview channel, Microsoft announced in the official release notes for this version that if you log in to Edge using Azure Active Directory (now renamed Microsoft Entra ID), you will automatically be converted to Edge for Business. The new Edge for Business icon will have a briefcase to designate that you are in a working browser window.
But you may ask, what’s so special about it? Well, Edge for Business comes with features that are not available on the regular version of Edge. These features include enterprise-grade security, productivity, manageability, built-in AI, and a few visual cues here and there.
Additionally, if you seek to maintain a clear distinction between your personal and professional areas, Edge for Business can help you by creating a clear distinction between your personal (MSA profile) and work (Entra ID) aspects to do this automatically.
However, this is not a new browser. Microsoft says that Edge for Business does maintain passwords, favorites, and other data associated with your work profile, but that data is not stored in your personal profile. For IT, this model can also help reduce the perimeter of cyberattacks by providing a single browser for all use cases.
Edge for Business is available on Windows, Linux, and Mac with version 116.
