Apple is testing a base version of the new M3 on its new Mac mini on Sunday. The company has been testing chips with up to 40 GPU cores on high-end MacBook Pros.

Bloomberg’s sources indicate that there is a new laptop computer code-named J514, equipped with an Apple Silicon chip with a 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU. M3 Max VS M2 Max

Specifically, the high-end version of the new MacBook Pro will be driven by the M3 Max chip, with 12 high-performance cores and 4 performance cores. Compared with M2 Max, there are four more CPU cores and 2 more GPU cores. Bloomberg also heard that the new MacBook Pro has 48 GB of RAAM, and the current model can be configured with 32 GB, 64 GB, and 96 GB of RAAM, but this is just one of the configurations Apple is testing internally.

M3 Pro VS M2 Pro

In a previous report, Gurman mentioned that the new base M3 chip will have an 8-core CPU and 10 Core GPU, similar to M2. However, the M3 Pro is expected to have a 12-core CPU and 18-core GPU, which is two extra CPU and GPU cores compared to the M2 Pro.

While the performance increase from M2 to M3 may not be significant, the M3 chip will benefit from the new 3nm architecture, the same A17 chip that will be launched in the iPhone 15 Pro later this year. This means the new chip will consume less power, which is good news for MacBook owners. The transition to M3 is expected to begin in October, with entry-level Macs first including the iMac and 13-inch MacBook Pro.
