According to official information from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the reflective surface laser target maintenance robot developed by Jing Fengshui's research group at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Guizhou Radio Astronomy Observatory, is part of the national key research and development program "Major Scientific Infrastructure FAST" An important achievement of the "Operation and Maintenance Robot System" project has been accepted by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The robot can efficiently complete the cleaning, disassembly and replacement tasks of laser targets, realize fully automatic maintenance of laser targets on the FAST reflective surface, and provide operation and maintenance support for the "China Sky Eye"
FAST is the world's largest and most accurate single-aperture radio telescope, with an aperture of 500 meters. There are 2225 laser targets distributed on its reflective surface. These targets are an integral part of the control system, like the "eyes" of the reflective surface, and require regular maintenance and replacement. However, the reflective surface is made of 1mm thick aluminum plate and cannot bear the weight of a normal adult. At present, maintenance work mainly relies on the "Microgravity Spiderman", but there are problems such as low maintenance efficiency, poor safety, and difficulty in maintaining targets in large slope environments
The project team successfully developed a target maintenance robot to cope with the complex maintenance environment on the FAST surface. The robot system consists of a target maintenance execution system, an omnidirectional motion platform and a navigation system. It can move omnidirectionally on special surfaces with large slopes, conduct three-dimensional measurements in complex environments, and autonomously screw special-shaped bolts in unstructured environments. . The robot can accurately measure the target's posture, perform operations such as disassembling and grabbing old targets and assembling and tightening new targets, complete target replacement and cleaning tasks, and can fully automatically perform target maintenance work
In order to ensure the safety of FAST on-site maintenance, project team members conducted long-term debugging experiments on the robot in a high-slope reflective surface simulation environment, verifying the robot's movement performance and target maintenance performance under the condition of an extreme slope of 56 degrees. . After adaptive debugging in the actual environment of the Guizhou Radio Astronomy Observatory, the robot has been successfully used in the replacement and maintenance of the FAST reflective surface laser target, effectively solving the previously existing high-risk operation risks, inefficient manual maintenance and climatic conditions that affected the observation. restrictions and other issues, thereby improving the efficiency and safety of FAST maintenance operations
