News on June 22, as early as 2015, Microsoft launched the Windows Hello feature for Windows 10, which is a way to log in to Windows devices without a password.
Microsoft believes that passwords are not always the most secure, so Windows Hello allows users to log in using fingerprint and facial recognition. Additionally, the company is removing password restrictions in 2021 so users no longer need to access their Microsoft Account (MSA).
Now, Microsoft announced that Windows Hello will now display a new full-screen greeting, and users will need to choose whether to continue using facial recognition or fingerprint login.
If a user chooses not to continue using Windows Hello, Microsoft will also provide an option to change their sign-in options and delete their face/fingerprint data.
Simply put, after updating KB5028763, you may (which will be gradually rolled out starting on June 13th) receive a full-screen notification saying "Choose whether you want to continue using your Face or fingerprint login" and "Do you want to continue storing your face or fingerprint data on this computer?"
To continue, you need to select one of two options and then select "Next":
- "Yes, sign in with my face or fingerprint. Continue to store my data so I can sign in to this PC using Windows Hello face or fingerprint recognition."
- "No, change how you sign in. Take me to settings where I can remove sign-in options and delete my data."
If you selected "Yes, sign in with my face or fingerprint," then select If you click Next, no further steps are required; if you select No, change how you sign in, the Settings app will open and you will need to take any additional steps required to change how you sign in to your device.
Microsoft mentioned that starting June 13, 2023, you may receive this full-screen dialog box if one of the following describes your device:
- You have recently updated or upgraded your device to a newer version of Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- You have been using Windows Hello with face or fingerprint recognition to sign in to your Windows device for more than 1 year (365 days) and have installed an update released on June 13, 2023 or later.
IT Home Reminder: This setting must be selected by the end user of the device and cannot be preconfigured on the administrator's managed device.
