MySQL table design tutorial: Create a simple online survey results table

In this article, we will introduce how to use the MySQL database to create a simple online survey results table. Online surveys are one of the common tools for collecting user feedback and opinions and are widely used in many different applications. A good database design is key to building a powerful and scalable online survey system.

Before you begin, please make sure you have installed and configured the MySQL database and have basic knowledge of the SQL language.

First, we need to create a new database to store our survey results. Open the MySQL command line terminal or any other available MySQL client and enter the following command to create the database:

CREATE DATABASE survey;

Next, we will switch to the newly created database:

USE survey;

Next , we will create a table named "survey_results" to store the survey results. The table will contain the following columns: survey ID, user ID, question ID, answer, and timestamp. Enter the following command to create this table:

CREATE TABLE survey_results (
    id INT AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,
    survey_id INT,
    user_id INT,
    question_id INT,
    answer VARCHAR(255),
    timestamp TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP
);

In the above command, we used the keyword "CREATE TABLE" to create a table named "survey_results". Then, the table's columns are defined within parentheses, with each column's name, data type, and constraints. The "id" column is defined as an auto-incrementing primary key, which will be stored using the INTEGER type. "survey_id", "user_id" and "question_id" are defined as INTEGER types and are used to store IDs related to surveys, users and questions. The "answer" column uses VARCHAR(255) type to store the answer content, and the length can be adjusted as needed. Finally, the "timestamp" column is defined as a TIMESTAMP type and uses the default value CURRENT_TIMESTAMP to store the record's timestamp.

Now, we have successfully created a simple online survey results form. Next, we can insert data into the table by executing SQL statements, for example:

INSERT INTO survey_results (survey_id, user_id, question_id, answer)
VALUES (1, 1, 1, 'Yes');

In the above command, we use the "INSERT INTO" keyword to insert a new record into the "survey_results" table . We specified the values of the columns to be inserted, namely "survey_id", "user_id", "question_id" and "answer". Here is a sample insert statement, you can adjust the values and columns as needed.

In addition to inserting data, you can also use other SQL statements to query, update, and delete records from the table. For example, here is a simple query to retrieve a list of all survey results:

SELECT * FROM survey_results;

By executing this query, you will get all the records in the "survey_results" table.

To summarize, in this article we learned how to create a simple online survey results table using a MySQL database. We learned how to define columns and the supported data types and constraints. We also learned how to use SQL statements to insert data into the table, and learned some basic query statements. Hopefully you now have a better understanding of creating and using MySQL tables, and can make appropriate adjustments and extensions based on the needs of your actual application.

Code example:

CREATE DATABASE survey;

USE survey;

CREATE TABLE survey_results (
    id INT AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY,
    survey_id INT,
    user_id INT,
    question_id INT,
    answer VARCHAR(255),
    timestamp TIMESTAMP DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP
);

INSERT INTO survey_results (survey_id, user_id, question_id, answer)
VALUES (1, 1, 1, 'Yes');

SELECT * FROM survey_results;

Adding MySQL users through the PHP web interface can use MySQLi extensions. The steps are as follows: 1. Connect to the MySQL database and use the MySQLi extension. 2. Create a user, use the CREATEUSER statement, and use the PASSWORD() function to encrypt the password. 3. Prevent SQL injection and use the mysqli_real_escape_string() function to process user input. 4. Assign permissions to new users and use the GRANT statement.
