Recently, several prestigious foreign technology giants have demonstrated their AI ambitions.

For example, Apple held WWDC 23, Microsoft held Build 23, and even Google held a search business conference in February.

The actions of these giants undoubtedly highlight the rise of generative artificial intelligence (AIGC), and have also led to a number of teams and institutions that were previously not interested in artificial intelligence.

Now these big technology companies are betting heavily on artificial intelligence. A few notable signs are: Google AI, Microsoft Copilot, Apple Machine Learning, and OpenAI are pursuing general artificial intelligence.

Apple’s Machine Learning

Apple seems to be “not interested” in the term artificial intelligence.

At this year's WWDC, there was no mention of "artificial intelligence" or some of the more popular terms in the current technology world such as "ChatGPT". All Apple did was briefly mention “machine learning (ML)” seven times.

Even when introducing the Vision Pro AR glasses they have been preparing for 7 years, they only stated that they "use an advanced encoding-decoding neural network."

In fact, Apple’s understanding of artificial intelligence may be more accurate. They have invested heavily in machine learning research and have assembled a team of talented researchers and engineers. They apply machine learning to a variety of projects, including Siri, Photos, Health and CarPlay, to improve the user experience.

This year, Apple has also updated new features based on machine learning, such as Live Text, Visual Look Up and Safety Check, which all run on the iOS 16 system. Obviously, Apple’s focus on artificial intelligence (machine learning) is to change the way users interact.

The only regrettable thing may be that Apple is not very competitive in terms of data. After all, Cook has said more than once: We are a company not interested in user data. ’

In other words, although Apple’s mobile devices are fascinating, they may have difficulty competing with cloud computing companies such as Google and Meta.

GoogleAI

The most famous one is undoubtedly Google Brain technology. In terms of talent training, it also has "artificial intelligence talent retention" Program (Google AI Residency Program)”.

Google has made breakthrough progress in artificial intelligence algorithms and systems, promoting the creation of artificial intelligence-based products and services such as Google Search, Google Translate and Google Photos.

The Google I/O event highlighted Bard, a chatbot that competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Faced with Google’s approach, some industry insiders believe that Google’s approach of adjusting artificial intelligence operations and prioritizing the rapid launch of products is “responsive” and is different from its past innovation-oriented approach. The approach has deviated.

Google’s parent company Alphabet has been investing in artificial intelligence for years and acquired DeepMind in 2014. Recently, Alphabet merged its Google research team with DeepMind to integrate artificial intelligence efforts. However, some experts believe that this integration should have happened earlier because Google did not take full advantage of its leading artificial intelligence products, resulting in falling behind Microsoft in 2022.

Meta and self-supervised learning

Meta has been very optimistic about self-supervised learning since 2017. In recent years, they have also provided the industry with a lot of self-supervised learning algorithms and frameworks.

For example, SimCLR, SwAV and DINO have achieved SOTA results in tasks such as image classification and target detection.

Meta established Megatron in 2021, a computing cluster for self-supervised learning algorithm training. In 2022, they published the Data2vec paper, introducing an SSL algorithm across speech, visual and text modalities.

As Meta’s Yann LeCunn has emphasized many times, he does not believe in RLHF.

"I think RLHF is hopeless because the space for wrong answers is very large, and wicked problems generally have long-tail distributions that RLHF cannot solve. Any system that does not experience the world and learn on its own will be subject to The data it learns from.”

Microsoft and Copilot

Microsoft has invested heavily in artificial intelligence in recent years, and its Copilot The project is one of the most ambitious examples of such investment. It is a powerful language model that can generate text, translate languages, and assist in a variety of creative tasks.

Copilot’s goal is to change the way people work and create by improving efficiency, inspiring creativity and enhancing inclusivity. Microsoft plans to provide Copilot service for free to Microsoft 365 users and as a standalone product. This tool has the potential to usher in the impact of artificial intelligence on the world, bringing benefits such as increased productivity, improved quality and expanded creativity.

Microsoft has also expanded the application of Copilot to the CRM and ERP fields, launching Dynamics 365 Copilot, and GitHub has also released Github Copilot for Business, which is an artificial intelligence programming for the public assistant.

OpenAGI

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other founders talk artificial intelligence on multiple platforms General Intelligence (AGI), with both interest and concern about the benefits and risks it may bring. Altman said in an interview with Lex Fridman that he believes AGI is "probably 10 to 20 years away" and is expected to have a "positive impact" on humanity, while emphasizing the importance of ensuring its responsible use.

Altman also admitted that AGI has some risks, such as being abused or causing massive unemployment. Altman emphasized the need to consider the pros and cons of AGI promptly. He works to develop safety guidelines and build a community of experts to promote responsible use of AGI. Altman's visit reflects growing global interest in AGI. As AGI becomes more of a reality, it’s important to think about its possible benefits and risks. Under Altman's leadership, OpenAI focuses on safe and ethical AGI development.

In a blog post, Altman and the other founders described their expectations for AGI, arguing that it could "solve some of the world's most pressing problems," such as climate change, Poverty and disease can also stimulate human creativity and wisdom.

However, they are also aware of the potential risks of AGI, including being used to create autonomous weapons or causing mass unemployment by replacing human jobs.

Amazon and cloud services

Amazon has invested heavily in artificial intelligence research, and its cloud services are artificial intelligence An important platform for intelligent development and deployment.

They are also committed to providing tools and resources to AI developers. Cloud-based platform SageMaker, for example, makes it easier to build, train and deploy ML models that can be used for a variety of applications such as fraud detection, churn prediction and product recommendations.

The recently released Falcon 40B is a large language model developed on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Falcon 40B is a versatile and robust tool for translation, Q&A, summarization, and image recognition, and is accessible through Amazon SageMaker JumpStart on AWS.
