Google Colab will soon use Codey for AI coding

Google Colab, a platform that has been promoting Python programming since 2017, will introduce AI coding capabilities using Codey, Google’s advanced code model. Codey is built on the PaLM 2 model, carefully fine-tuned on large, high-quality code datasets from external sources to improve its performance on coding tasks.

Colab’s upcoming features include auto-completion of code, conversion of natural language into code, and a chatbot with code assistance. The initial focus is on code generation, a feature designed to help users generate larger code snippets and write entire functions from comments or hints. This is intended to reduce the need to write repetitive code, allowing users to focus on more complex aspects of programming and data science.

In addition to the above functions, Colab also has a built-in chatbot that allows users to query directly on the platform. This feature promises to simplify the process of asking for help, allowing users to ask questions like "How do I import data from Google Sheets?" or "How do I filter a Pandas DataFrame?" directly within Colab.

The release of these features will be done in phases, with initial access going to Colab users in the United States. Deployment will begin with paid subscribers and then expand to users of the free tier. Used by more than 70,000 people worldwide, Google Colab continues its mission to democratize machine learning and make it accessible to anyone with an internet connection, including under-resourced groups.

Google also revealed that they are planning more features and improvements to enhance Colab’s usefulness and integration in data and machine learning workflows.
