Microsoft Edge has a variety of built-in tools to optimize performance, extend battery life, and save resources. This browser is fast, responsive, intelligent, and has a growing user base.
The official Edge Dev Twitter account revealed some data on how Edge optimizes resources. According to Microsoft, Sleeping Tabs helped save more than 273 petabytes of RAM (273,000TB) in the past 28 days. Saving approximately 40MB of memory per tag, the feature works for 6 billion tags.
40MB of RAM might not sound all that impressive, but considering the average consumer typically has dozens of tabs open at all times, it’s actually a big deal. Beyond that, not everyone has a computer with a lot of RAM, so the 40MB memory savings won't make any difference to them.
The sleep tab will be very useful for those who own low-priced computers or buy the latest Surface Laptop Go 2. Microsoft considers 4GB of RAM to be acceptable in a $599 laptop, so at least Edge can support you and squeeze out some RAM for other tasks.
Hibernate tabs are enabled by default on all Microsoft Edge installations. It automatically puts inactive pages to sleep after two hours of inactivity, but you can customize the feature by changing the timeout or selecting sites for the browser to keep active.
