  • Microsoft is integrating AI directly into its operating system with Windows Copilot.
  • Windows Copilot will appear on the taskbar, allowing you to adjust settings, connect across applications, and more.
  • This feature will be available in preview on Windows 11 starting in June.

Microsoft intends to continue its efforts to explore more ways to integrate artificial intelligence into every product it makes. The latest move is to establish AI assistants as the core and forefront of Windows 11.

Microsoft Build, the tech giant's annual developer conference, kicked off today. It might come as a surprise, but this year, artificial intelligence was a big theme at the event. In addition to making various business and developer-related announcements, the company also announced the launch of Windows Copilot.

As Microsoft explains, "copilot" is a term coined by the company to refer to applications that use modern artificial intelligence and large language models such as GPT-4. They are designed to help users complete complex tasks. Windows Copilot, in particular, is designed to be a centralized AI assistant that users can easily find and use to answer questions, customize settings, connect across apps, and more.

According to the announcement, the feature will be located in the center of the taskbar. Once clicked, a sidebar pops up and users can interact with it in the same way they interact with Bing Chat.

In the video above you can see some examples showing how this feature works. One example shows a user typing "How can I adjust my system to get the job done?" The bot will then not only suggest use of the focus timer feature and dark mode, but will also allow the user to enable these features directly from the app.

Another example shows the user taking a document and moving it to the "Ask a question" field. When the user clicks on the summary, Windows Copilot will generate a topic numbered list that includes the topics discussed in the document.

Windows Copilot will not be available immediately. But Microsoft says it will release a preview version of Windows 11 in June.
