Apple said today that iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 will be available to all users next week after weeks of developer and public beta testing.
iOS 15.4 includes major new features for iPhone users, perhaps the most notable of which is that users can use Face ID to unlock their “iPhone” while wearing a mask. Apple says it has been able to update its "Face ID" system to uniquely identify the area around a user's eyes, using that information to unlock a device even when wearing a mask. This feature is only available on iPhone 12 and above.
The most notable new feature on iPadOS 15.4 and macOS Monterey 12.3 is Universal Control. Universal Control was originally demoed at WWDC 2021, and although Apple promised to launch the feature before the end of 2021, it had to delay it until spring 2022. Universal Control allows users to use one mouse and keyboard across multiple Macs and iPads for a seamless user experience.
Apple said macOS Monterey 12.3 will also be launched next week.
iOS and iPadOS 15.4 also includes other new changes and features, such as 37 new emojis and lays the foundation for Tap to Pay on iPhone. The update also includes enhancements to AirTags and the option to add custom domains to iCloud Mail directly on the device. Release notes for all updates will be released next week after the update goes live.
