News on May 22, Meta recently launched the first computer chip customized specifically for processing artificial intelligence programs, called Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, referred to as "MTIA".
The chip consists of a grid of circuit blocks running in parallel running software optimized using Meta's PyTorch open source developer framework.
The chip is described as a specific type of artificial intelligence program with a deep learning recommendation model, which is Meta’s parlance. These programs can detect a pattern of activity, such as a user clicking on a post on a social network, and predict potentially relevant content and then recommend it to the user.
This chip is the first version of the Meta chip family, which Meta said it originated in 2020. No details were provided as to when future models of the chip would be available.
In addition to using the standard GPU chips that Nvidia dominates in the field, Meta has also developed its own AI chips with other technology giants. Over the past few years, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have all developed a variety of specialized chips to handle various artificial intelligence functions.
In addition to MTIA chips, the company also discussed the next-generation data center under construction, which will be artificial intelligence-optimized design, support liquid-cooled artificial intelligence hardware and high-performance artificial intelligence network, connecting thousands of artificial intelligence chips , for data center-scale artificial intelligence training clusters.
Meta also disclosed a custom chip for video encoding called the Meta Scalable Video Processor (MSVP).
The purpose of this chip is to improve the compression and decompression efficiency of videos and encode them into a variety of different formats so that Facebook users can upload and watch them. Meta said that the MSVP chip can provide 4K peak transcoding performance of 15fps in the highest quality configuration of 1 in and 5 out streams, and can be extended to 4K at 60fps in the standard quality configuration.
Meta said that rather than relying on Nvidia’s GPUs or Intel’s CPUs, considering future use cases related to artificial intelligence, we believe that dedicated hardware is the best solution in terms of video computing power and efficiency.
