Nowadays, the storage and data transmission capabilities of U disks are very strong, and they can run across various platforms. The storage space has even reached 256G, which is comparable to the capacity of ordinary hard drives in the past. Here, we will show you how to encrypt a USB flash drive. Mom no longer has to worry about me following in the footsteps of Teacher Chen... #Theft of laptops and USB flash drives has been one of the main causes of data breaches in the past few years. However, compared to laptops, people usually pay less attention to the security of USB flash drives. If a criminal steals a USB flash drive worth less than $12, it could cost the company about $1 million.

As the storage capacity of U disk increases and its price gradually decreases, you can easily store all your personal data in a portable and compact U disk. Although U disks are now inseparable, there are some shortcomings of U disks that we need to face up to. For example, USB flash drives are very easy to be stolen and lost.

Encrypted U disk storage device

Encrypted device is an important means to protect corporate data and does not only rely on access passwords. Let’s introduce how to create an encrypted USB drive in Ubuntu:

First, you need to install cryptsetup under Linux: sudo apt-get install -y cryptsetup

After installation, insert the U disk you want to encrypt into the computer. Remember to back up the data in the U disk before, because the encryption process requires a formatted disk.

After you have backed up the data in the USB flash drive, open Disk Utility in Dash.

Now, select your USB drive from the list on the left and click the Stop or Uninstall button below the highlighted area.

Next, click the gear icon that appears in the row, select "Format", and you will see a window pop up.

You can choose the fast or slow format option (slow is more secure), and then select "Encrypted and compatible with Linux (LUKS Ext4)".

Finally, you need to enter a name for the USB flash drive, set a password, and finally start formatting.

Depending on the formatting speed option selected, you need to wait a different amount of time. Once it is finished, pull out your USB flash drive and insert it again, you will see the following prompt:

Congratulations, you have successfully encrypted your USB flash drive.

Encrypting a USB flash drive under Ubuntu is that simple. Every time you connect the USB flash drive to a Linux system in the future, it will ask you to provide a password to unlock it, and then you can use it normally as before. Even if you accidentally lose the USB flash drive, the data inside is still safe, and hackers cannot access the contents without relevant authentication.
