Apple’s update to Final Cut Pro on Tuesday includes improvements to the app’s performance on Mac Studio that users will notice in the real world. Here's how quickly you can expect the export to complete.
Update version 10.6.2 brings optimized playback and graphics performance to the M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips on the new Mac Studio. This batch of updates is included in Apple's video applications, including iMovie and Motion. Optimization does have an impact on real-world performance.
We tested Final Cut Pro 4K video rendering on a Mac Studio with an M1 Max, 32 GPU cores, and 64GB of unified memory. This video was exported directly from Final Cut Pro at 9 minutes, 4K resolution, 29.97 frame rate, H.264 encoding.
Test results before and after the update. Before the update, the render took 3:30, and after installing Final Cut Pro version 10.6.2, the same render took 3:10.
We discovered additional improvements after installing Tuesday’s update. Overall, editing is smoother and there are fewer graphical inconsistencies when editing audio waveforms.
Additionally, Compressor also opens much faster on our Mac Studio compared to the three to four minute boot time it had before the update.
We are continuing to test updates. Additionally, while not specifically stated, we also ran tests on the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro to see if the update had any impact.
