Rich actionable preview and Power Apps integration coming soon to Microsoft Teams

Microsoft announced a series of updates to Teams collaboration software features at the ongoing Build 2022 conference. While some features require action by developers, they should ultimately lead to a better experience for end users.

Teams will soon support expanding links to present richer actionable card previews. Developers need to make some minor changes to update their app manifests to support app links. Meanwhile, for other links, such as links to websites, web authors will need to take advantage of structured schema.org metadata and tag manipulation. This feature will be previewed over the summer.

In the same time period, low-code developers will be able to leverage collaboration controls in Power Apps to integrate Teams and Microsoft 365 collaboration features such as chat, meetings, tasks, files and approvals) integrated directly into their Power Apps. Microsoft Graph APIs for Teams, currently in preview, can also help developers in this area.

The Teams JavaScript 2.0 SDK and its associated manifest tools have been officially released (GA) simultaneously. These applications can be developed into Teams applications that can be extended to Office.com and Outlook to benefit organizations. Likewise, the Approvals API will be available in preview this summer. The above features will enable users to build approval workflows within Line of Business (LOB) applications.

ISVs can also sign up for a private preview of the Application Compliance Automation Tool to get their applications protected and certified by Microsoft.

Developers actively working on Teams will be happy to know that the Teams Toolkit for Visual Studio Code and the Teams Toolkit CLI are officially released. These tools enable developers to turn existing web applications into Teams applications and build notification mechanisms. Currently, the same toolkit for Visual Studio 2022 is only in preview.

Developers building apps for Teams should also be aware that discoverability in the Teams app store through smart recommendations and app pop-ups is now generally available. There's also a curated "Featured Apps" section to improve visibility as well. Developers can also use new APIs to configure in-app purchases, and better license management features will also be available as a preview this summer.

Starting next month, private preview users can use existing adaptive cards to create loop components. Once components reach GA (Generally Available), they can be copied and pasted between Outlook and Teams and remain in sync.
