Getting Started with PHP: EventLoop Programming Model

phpGetting Started Guideeventloop programming model

PHP, as a dynamic scripting language, is widely used in the field of Web development. In PHP, we usually use the blocking IO model to handle client requests, that is, each request requires a thread to process, which consumes a lot of server resources. In order to solve this problem, we can use the non-blocking IO model, and the EventLoop programming model is a way to implement non-blocking IO.

I. Introduction to EventLoop

EventLoop is an event loop framework that handles I/O by polling events such as file descriptors or signals. It is an asynchronous model based on event triggering. In EventLoop, all events are asynchronous. When an event occurs, EventLoop will call the corresponding callback function to handle it.

In PHP, EventLoop mainly relies on the libevent extension. libevent is an event notification library that provides a unified interface to handle underlying events on different platforms.

II. EventLoop programming model

EventLoop usually consists of three parts:

  1. Registering events

In EventLoop, we need Register all events that need to be handled. The following is a simple sample code:

$eventBase = event_base_new();  //创建event base

$fd = socket_create(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, SOL_TCP); //创建socket

event_set($event, $fd, EV_READ | EV_PERSIST, 'accept_conn', $eventBase); //注册事件

event_base_set($event, $eventBase);  //将事件与event base关联

event_add($event); //添加事件

In this example, we first create an event base, and then use the socket_create function to create a socket descriptor. Next, we use the event_set function to register the socket descriptor as a readable event and specify the callback function accept_conn to handle it.

  1. Handling events

Handling events is the core part of EventLoop and the key to implementing asynchronous calls.

In EventLoop, we need to use the event_base_loop function to start the event loop. When an event occurs, EventLoop will call the corresponding callback function to process the event. The following is a simple sample code:

function accept_conn($fd, $events, $arg) {
    $conn = socket_accept($fd); //接收客户端连接

    $buf = socket_read($conn, 1024); //读取客户端请求

    socket_write($conn, 'Hello World!'); //向客户端发送响应

    socket_close($conn) //关闭连接
}

$eventBase = event_base_new();  //创建event base

$fd = socket_create(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, SOL_TCP); //创建socket

event_set($event, $fd, EV_READ | EV_PERSIST, 'accept_conn', $eventBase); //注册事件

event_base_set($event, $eventBase);  //将事件与event base关联

event_add($event); //添加事件

event_base_loop($eventBase); //启动事件循环

In this example, we first define an accept_conn callback function to handle the socket descriptor used to listen for client connections. When the listening socket descriptor is readable, EventLoop will call the accept_conn callback function to handle the event.

In the accept_conn callback function, we first use the socket_accept function to accept the client connection, then read the client request, send a response to the client, and finally close the connection.

  1. Release resources

Finally, we need to use the event_del function to remove the event from the event base, and use the event_free function to release the resources occupied by the event. The following is a simple sample code:

event_del($event); //从event base中移除事件

event_free($event); //释放事件所占用的资源

event_base_free($eventBase); //释放event base所占用的资源

In this example, we use the event_del function to remove the event from the event base, use the event_free function to release the resources occupied by the event, and finally use the event_base_free function to release the event base resources occupied.

III. Summary

The EventLoop programming model is an asynchronous programming model based on event-driven, which can achieve efficient non-blocking IO and improve server performance and throughput. In PHP, we can use the libevent extension to implement the EventLoop programming model.
