The recently released Android 12L update for Surface Duo left us in awe with new wallpapers and numerous design elements Adjust to the new stylus menu and more. What really makes this version more interesting, though, are the hidden gems waiting to be discovered. A Surface Duo enthusiast recently shared a feature that allows using a Surface Duo device to access a Windows PC through a Remote Desktop Program (RDP) application.
Shane Craig showed off the details in his YouTube video, which he said was posted by a Twitter user. The first thing you share with him after plugging your device into the dock. Craig does the same thing in the video to demonstrate how a feature called "Force Desktop Mode" works.
However, it is important to note that this feature is not explicitly available because it is in developer mode. It can be activated by first enabling developer mode and going to Settings > System > Developer Options. From there, you can toggle the "Force Desktop Mode" option, which describes the feature as "Force experimental desktop mode on secondary monitors."
After activating and inserting the device into the dock, you will not see any changes on the ends of the Surface Duo device. Craig points out that it still works even though it's connected to a docking station that also has a monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached to it. However, the computer monitor will display an RDP application icon that you can click. Doing so will give you the option to connect to a Windows PC available on the network or in the cloud. This also allows for adding more PCs and connecting other applications.
While interesting, the feature isn't ready yet, so it may not be available to all Surface Duo users. Still, it opens up huge possibilities for the future of Surface Duo devices as tools for professionals who need easy access to their Windows.
