Windows 11 modern media player adds new video features

Microsoft teased Media Player for Windows 11 in November 2021, and it will be released to the public in early 2022. Meanwhile, Windows Media Player received another update for testers last month that included new features. The update is now available for everyone on the new Microsoft Store in Windows 11.

As you may know, Windows Media Player replaces Groove Music, the UWP app that had been the default music player for Windows after the company discontinued the older version of Windows Media Player.

This new media player is a reboot of Groove Music, but Microsoft wants to make it the successor to the iconic Windows Media Player. Windows 11’s modern media player gets major improvements with today’s update. The version number is 11.2203.30.0, which is available in the production channel with two notable changes:

• Introduction to the Music Library.
• Video enhancement options.

#A new music library experience is now available. As you can see in the screenshot above, it's now possible to quickly switch between different views on the artist page while browsing your collection.

If you don't see any media files in your media library, it may be because you don't have the folder containing the songs linked to your media player. The default view shows albums in a grid view, and the other shows all songs grouped by album.

You can also perform quick actions when you hover over albums, artists, videos, and playlists. These actions include quick selection and playback options.

Another big change is support for the video enhancement options dialog. This message appears when you play a video in the media player, and you can access it if you right-click anywhere on the playback screen.

#Right-clicking will obviously open a context menu where you can view the new file without having to navigate to another page. It also provides access to album pages as well as artist pages.

#The new option "Video Enhance" allows you to adjust the brightness and contrast of your video.

Microsoft says it's also working on improving media player performance, especially for devices with very large music libraries.

In addition to media player improvements, Microsoft has also begun testing a new Outlook client for Windows 11.
