LG UltraFine 5K monitor may return as Apple Studio monitor alternative
LG’s 27-inch UltraFine 5K external monitor has not been discontinued and will be back on sale next month.
After speculation that the LG UltraFine 5K monitor may have been discontinued while most major retailers are out of stock, LG told The Wall Street Journal that the UltraFine 5K is still in production, Not discontinued yet. Due to component shortages and high demand, this monitor is currently completely out of stock. LG expects the UltraFine 5K to be back in stock on its website as early as next month, with availability at other retailers likely to improve around the same time.
Apple teamed up with LG to develop the UltraFine 5K display, which includes a nearly identical panel to the 27-inch 5K iMac, features Thunderbolt connectivity, tight integration with macOS, and ideal 5120 x 2880 resolution with Retina scaling on Mac rate, making it the first choice of many Mac users in recent years.
Following the release of the Studio Display, Apple removed the 27-inch UltraFine 5K monitor from the Apple Store. Since the UltraFine 5K is similar to the Studio Display, Apple may choose to discontinue sales. The UltraFine 5K features a nearly identical 27-inch 5K panel with P3 wide color gamut, built-in speakers, built-in camera, a single Thunderbolt port capable of charging a MacBook, and three USB-C ports, but at $1,299, it's cheaper than the Studio Display $300.
The Studio Display adds a slim aluminum design, an extra 100 nits of brightness, and center stage functionality, but doesn't come standard with an adjustable-height stand. Apple continues to sell the UltraFine 5K's smaller sibling, the 23.7-inch UltraFine 4K monitor, for $699.
Reviews of the Studio Display were posted earlier today, and the response was mostly negative, but rumors suggest Apple plans to launch a higher-end 27-inch "Studio Display Pro" later this year, using mini-LED technology.
